Course Description:

Biology 1P and 2P is a laboratory science course that satisfies high school graduation requirements and UC and State University lab science requirements.  During this course students will apply critical thinking strategies to understand current biological phenomena through model building and laboratory explorations.  The primary topics we will learn are:  

  • Biodiversity and Unity through Evolution

  • Bioenergetics – Energy & Matter for Life, Homeostasis

  • Variation and Heritability – Genetics & Inheritance

  • Ecosystems – Organisms in their environment


Materials Needed DAILY:   

  • 1 inch to 1.5 inch binder

  • Binder dividers (5)

  • Pencils and Sharpener

  • Binder paper

(Optional)

  • Color Pencils

  • Blue or black Pens

  • Color markers

  • Highlighters

Grading Policy:

Grades are based on assessments measuring how well students demonstrate the learning objectives as determined from Tests, Labs, Projects, Classwork, Homework, Quizzes, Citizenship, and the Semester Final. The course grade will be will be calculated on the following scale:

Grading Scale

A=90-100%

B=80-89%

C=70-79%

D=60-69%

F=0-59%

Homework & Classwork Policy:  

Students are expected to complete homework and classwork on a regular basis. ONLY WORK COMPLETE TURNED IN WHEN DUE WILL RECEIVE FULL CREDIT! Late work is accepted and awarded points based on teacher discretion.  When you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what was missed and to complete the assignment immediately upon your return.   

* Keep ALL work that is turned back to you in case of grade discrepancy.

 

Behavior Policies: 5-Ps

  • Be Prepared – You have materials and completed assignments needed for success.

Other Important Information:

  • Extra credit is NOT provided to boost underperforming grades.

  • Each student is expected to know and follow all C.K. McClatchy policies regarding attendance, dress codes, use of electronics and behavior. (Refer to student handbook)

 

Discipline Policy:

Students who choose to not follow class and school policies will be subject to the following actions: warning, parent/guardian notification, and/or administration referral depending on the particular circumstance. visible electronic devices such as phones, iPods, headphones etc. during class time without teacher’s permission can be confiscated and turned into the discipline office.  

 

Teacher Availability:

Students who need assistance with classwork or need to make up assignments can make arrangements to come in after school or during lunch.  Parents or guardians should email or call teachers regarding student matters.

Reproduction Unit:  

The content of this course includes discussions, descriptions, and illustrations of the human reproductive system and their functions and processes.  Information will be presented regarding human sexuality, abstinence, contraception and sexually transmitted infections such as AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).  The California State Education Code states that parents/legal guardians may submit a written request to withdraw their student from some parts of this unit.  You may contact the Vice Principal of curriculum and/or the teacher if you have questions.

 

LABORATORY SAFTEY POLICIES:

  • All students will be required to demonstrate safety procedures before participating in lab activities.  

  • Students will be required to pay replacement or repair cost for any broken glassware, science equipment or classroom furnishings.  

  • Students will be removed from any science lab or activity if:  

    1. They have not completed pre lab assignments that prepare them to perform the lab procedures competently and safely.  

    2. They are behaving in such a manner that they put themselves/other students at risks of injury.

    3. They are not following the prescribed safety rules for the lab activity.

    4. If a student is removed from a lab or activity then an alternate assignment may be provided at the discretion of the teacher.
